Would you Wear?...... Stockings with Open Toe Shoes?

“What’s the rule on pantyhose and open-toe shoes?”

The short answer? Rock it.
Though I wouldn’t personally be as adventurous as Ms. Minaj with pink tights, I think wearing black or sheer stockings with peep or open toes is totally fine. Traditionally it’s a no-no and closed toes are preferred, but what else are you going to do with your open toed booties or suede peep toes in the winter?

Would You Wear? Winter Shorts

Winter shorts have been popping up everywhere, worn by everyone from style bloggers to celebrities. This is the perfect week to try out a pair! They can be really dressy and festive when styled correctly, and are a great alternative to the usual jeans or leggings for this time of year.

Tips & Tricks for Rocking Shorts in the Winter

  • Take inventory before you shop. You might already own a pair of shorts that will work just fine in the winter time. Look for styles made of a heavy fabric, or a dark or muted color. You can also go in the opposite direction, like Olivia Palermo does above, and rock light shorts with a dark ensemble.
  • Try wearing tights underneath. Tights will make shorts more season-appropriate, without the bulk of leggings.
  • If you’re feeling bold, try shorts with thigh-high socks or boots. As long and the thinnest part of your thigh is the part that’s exposed, you will look chic and proportional.
  • Leather or sequined shorts are more versatile that you think. Dress them up with ankle boots, a blazer, or a cardigan, or dress them down with a t-shirt, denim jacket, and flat boots.

Outfit Inspiration

Outfit 1: Daytime Casual

This outfit is a little bit preppy and a whole lot of fun! It’s perfect for a daytime event or class when you want yourself to stand out. Tweed shorts are perfect for any afternoon, and when paired with high boots, they become fashion-forward. You can also add tights for a more conservative look. Now all that’s left to do is pull on a classic cardigan, and finish with pearl studs and a girly headband.

Outfit 2: Dressy Night Look

This outfit is perfect for a party or a night on the town. Tone down the sparkle of the sequined shorts with a plain white t-shirt, a black boyfriend blazer, and matte black tights. Finish the look with a fun necklace and sexy ankle boots.

Outfit 3: Edgy and Urban-Chic

Sometimes, wearing something a little edgy and “model off duty”-esque is just what you need to break out of a style rut. Style bloggers have been rocking leather (or faux leather) shorts lately, and they look great with a shredded sweater and combat boots. Finish off the outfit with patterned tights, a chain necklace, and fedora.

Would you Rock.....(Faux) Fur?

Fur coats and vest in "perfect weather Cali" may sound out of our elements but here
are a few tips to help you pull the look off.

Tips and Tricks for Working Faux Fur into an Outfit

  • Try a faux fur vest. I got mine on sale for $20 at American Eagle last season, so this piece does not have to be a huge splurge. Fur vests look awesome with jeans and a long sleeved shirt, or a simple dress, leggings and boots.
  • Try small accents. If you’re hesitant about this look, try a faux fur scarf or purse for a hint of the trend. I also love corduroy and wool jackets with fur trimming on the collars and sleeves.
  • Keep it simple if you’re unsure. I love faux fur with florals and stripes, but my style is all about contrast. For a more conservative approach, try it out with solid colors.
  • Rock a faux fur jacket or coat. We all loved Carrie Bradshaw’s coat on SATC, and coats like hers are amazingly warm and stylish. Just be careful about wearing one in precipitation — water can make faux fur clump together awkwardly.
  • Experiment with animal print. I absolutely LOVE my leopard print faux fur jacket, and I’ve seen other great animal prints as well in stores this season. But to avoid looking like Cruella DeVille, seek out subtle, blended prints.

Outfit Ideas

Outfit #1: Casual Outfit for Daytime

Faux fur vests are great investments – they can literally change the entire look and feel of an outfit! Pair one with a long sleeved shirt – plain if you’re trying the trend for the first time, or striped to step up the style. Pull on a pair of worn-in jeans and add riding boots to keep your feet dry and warm. Finish with simple jewelry, like this menswear-inspired watch.

Outfit #2: Classic Look for a Semi-Formal Occasion

There’s nothing like a faux fur stole to completely change an outfit from plain-jane to absolutely glamorous! The outfit is perfect for a semi-formal occasion, like a date party, fancy dinner, or banquet. Start off with your trusty little black dress, classic black pumps, crystal earrings, and a pretty pearl bracelet. Finish the look with ruby red lips and a warm fur wrap.

Outfit #3: Trendy Look for a Night on the Town

This is one of my favorite outfits for a night out on the town. Liquid leggings and a simple tank dress make a great base outfit. Throw on a fancy necklace and pull on a furry leopard print coat for a chic outfit perfect for a cold night. Keep your feet warm with a pair of lace up boots. I have been absolutely lusting over Jeffrey Campbell’s Lita boots, but Forever 21 makes a great budget-friendly knockoff.

Would You Wear ....a Turban?

A turban might not be the first hair accessory you think of when your outfit is in need of something extra, but why not? I’ve spotted turbans on street style blogs galore lately, and several designers sent turbans down their runways for spring and fall. Need another reason to try a turban? How about the fact that you can make one out of a scarf that you already own? A turban is versatile, fun, and bold.

Tips and Tricks for Rocking a Turban

  • Tie it right. Learning to tie the turban correctly may take some time, but it’s worth the effort to look finished and pulled together. Check out one of the links in the Extra Credit Reading section to try it yourself.
  • Make it last. This isn’t just a summer look. Several designers (including Charlotte Ronson, above) featured turbans in their fall collections. Don’t be afraid to splurge on a great scarf, because besides being extremely versatile, it will last more than one season.
  • Let it pop. Allow your turban to steal the show. Choose one in a bold print, or pair it with a neutral outfit. This is a great opportunity to showcase your favorite scarf in a unique way.
  • Try a hybrid. If you don’t like the look of a full turban (like Sarah Jessica Parker’s, below) try a headband/turban mix, often referred to as a turband. Ashley Olsen sports a faux leather one above. Pictured below (right), from The Sartorialist: a turband with a bow.

Would You Wear.... Blue Lipstick?

It’ girl Amber Rose was spotted in Atlanta this weekend doing one of the things she does best—rocking something that most would normally back away from. Now I’m as daring as they come with makeup colors, but even I would have to leave the blue lip to the bold star.

If you were so inclined, here’s two blues to get your hands on:

Graftobian Pro Blue Lipstick or L’paige Blue Aloe Vera Lipstick
Or do-it-yourself with some lip-safe blue pigment and clear lipgloss.

Would You Wear… Combat Boots?

These shoes are not reserved for actual warfare or grunge looks anymore – they’ve officially hit the mainstream. In fact they are hugely popular and they seem to be everywhere when you go shopping. These boots are surprisingly easy to integrate into your wardrobe! You can expand on their funky vibe like the J. Crew model, or tone down their roughness with some feminine elements, like Nicki Hilton (both pictured above). Still unsure? Here are two ways I would rock the look:

Product Information: Shirt – Modcloth, Jeans – Debenhams, Boots – Amazon, Purse – Bag Borrow or Steal, Earrings – Charm or Chain, Bracelet – Nordstrom

Dress them down…
